Project HALIA, Holographic Aircraft Lightning Impact Assessment, introduced mixed reality to Australian telecommunications leader Telstra and their customer, Qantas Airlines. HALIA demonstrates a mixed reality maintenance solution that streamlines Qantas lightning strike inspection, damage assessment and recovery. The project features mixed reality integration with an actual Qantas aircraft panel; lightning mark annotation, measurement and recording UI; x-ray view of the aircraft frame; demonstration of video and text-based reference resources, and 3D animations of Qantas aircraft flying, encountering lightning, landing and taking off.
Success criteria for the 12-week project included engaging mixed reality experience design for a live demo installation in Telstra headquarters; an IP foundation that can be leveraged; marketing reinforcement of Qantas’ safety messaging; exciting possibility and bringing to life a powerful mixed reality application scenario. The Telstra team embedded with Microsoft during production for training in mixed reality design and engineering.
